OCTOBER 2008:  "Shattering Expectations:
A Blind Man's Quest to Climb Mt. Everest"

featuring Erik Weihenmayer

Erik Weihenmayer is the only blind person to have climbed the "Seven Summits", the tallest peak on every continent. He has scaled the 3000 foot rock face of El Capitan, skied down the tallest peak in Europe, and much more. Erik is a prolific speaker and author of two books. Erik is the author of "Touch the Top of the World" and co-author of "The Adversity Advantage". Erik was joined by Jeff Evans, climbing partner/author. A book signing by both after the presentation was held.

Also featured was the Premier Showing of "Blindsight" the documentary film that follows Erik's adventures with six blind Tibetan teenages who climb to 21,500 feet on the north side of Mt. Everest. An extensive reading program for area students, utilizing Erik's book "Touch the Top of the World" with Erik speaking with them about dreaming big, then working through adversities to make a mark on the world concluded the event. 

NOVEMBER 2007:  Clinical Trials Information Fair & Expo
Special guests: 
Dr. Kellie Lim, who lost an arm and both legs at age 8, told her story of how she overcame adversity, finished medical school, and is now a pediatrics resident;
and Dr. Ben Carson, who was raised in poverty and overcame significant odds to become a Pediatric Neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins, shared his story.
Following Dr. Ben Carson's Speech, Barnes & Noble hosted a book signing with Dr. Carson.
