A novel treatment for a very painful problem – osteoporosis related compression fractures – has resulted in nearly instant pain relief in most patients. Capable of being done with either general, spinal, or local anesthesia medicine, it involves two small needle-holes which deliver a balloon to create a cavity in the fractured spine vertebra, followed by cement injection. The cement dries in minutes, and most (about 90% in our experience) seem to have instant relief, being able to go home either the same or next day. Our practice has performed a large number of these procedures in the region – actual surgical time is generally less than about 10 minutes for a single level.
