Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spine, can be treated by removal of the ligament and bone causing the narrowing without destabilizing the spine. Great care is done to perform a microscopic procedure with a patient generally asleep (general anesthesia), allowing relaxation of the nerve roots. The procedure generally takes about 30 minutes for a single-level laminectomy, and most patients can be discharged to home either the same day or next day. Most activities can be resumed immediately, and depending upon condition prior to surgery, some patients may improve leg strength with physical therapy afterwards.
