Neuropathic pain often involves a burning, tingling, severe, aching, pain which may be imagined to result from the “short-circuiting” of nerve fibers in a nerve. This pain, often referred to as “dysesthetic pain,” may involve the arms or legs, as well as other regions of the body. Treatment typically involves medications initially, but newer surgical treatments (particularly spinal cord stimulation) can offer relief when no other surgically correctable cause is found.
